Benjamin Wallingford was born about 1735 in Virginia. His parents were Benjamin Wallingford and Mary Clark He married Prudence Elliott about 1752. Prudence and Benjamin's children probably included: Martha Wallingford (1754, married Charles Willett), The Wallingford family, along with the Willetts, Laytons, and Applegates, traveled to Kentucky from Virginia. They went by ox cart to the Ohio River and floated down to what is now Maysville. At that time it was known as Limestone, Kentucky. Prudence died in 1786 and Benjamin returned to Virginia for awhile. In 1786, Benjamin Wallingford and 100 others petitioned the Virginia Legislature asking for the founding of Washington, Kentucky. He had settled there and named his home "Mt. Gilead" meaning East of Jordan. It was on the line between Mason and Fleming County. Benjamin Franklin Wallingford died in Mason County, Kentucky about 1803. |
